American tycoon John D Rockefeller and his wife arriving at Cleveland, Ohio, 1912 (1951). Rockefeller (1839-1937) made his fortune in the petroleum industry. He founded Standard Oil in 1870 and ran it until he retired in 1897. After his retirement from business, Rockefeller devoted himself to philanthropic works. He married his wife, Laura, in 1864.
