Oliver Cromwell as Christ, c1650s(?). Cromwell (1599-1658) as Christ, triumphing over evil in the shape of the Whore of Babylon and the beast of the apocalypse. Cromwell commanded the forces of Parliament during the English Civil War. After the war England, Scotland and Ireland became a commonwealth. Cromwell was head of state as Lord Protector of the Commonwealth from 1653 until his death.
