Exterior of the National Gallery, London, 1887. Construction of the National Gallery, designed by William Wilkins, began in 1837. In the 1870s, with the Gallery's collection growing too large for the building, an East Wing was added by Edward Middleton Barry. The Church of St Martin-in-the-Fields, designed by James Gibbs and built in the 1720s, is in the background.
