Interior of the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls, Rome, Italy, late 19th or early 20th century. The Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls (San Paolo fuori le Mura) is one of the four great papal basilicas of Rome. It was founded in the 4th century by the Emperor Constantine over the burial site of St Paul. The building was almost completely destroyed by a fire in 1823 after which it was rebuilt.
