Pena Palace, Sintra, Portugal, 20th century. The Pena National Palace was built on the site of a monastery badly damaged by the great earthquake that struck Lisbon in 1755. King Ferdinand II of Portugal acquired the site in 1838 and commissioned a German mining engineer and amateur architect, Baron Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege, to build him a Romantic style palace to serve as a summer residence. Construction took place between 1842 and 1854.
