The Corinth Canal cuts through the Isthmus of Corinth to connect the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea, enabling ships to avoid a lengthy voyage around the Peleponnesian peninsula. 6.3 kilometres in length, it was built between 1881 and 1893.
