Gopuram, Sri Meenakshi Hindu Temple, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, c1900s(?). Stereoscopic card. Dedicated to Shiva and his consort, the princess Meenakshi, the temple was begun in 1560 and completed around 120 years later. A prominent feature of southern Indian Hindu temple architecture, gopurams are gateway towers richly decorated with sculpture depicting scenes from Hindu mythology.
