The Bartholdi Fountain and the Capitol, Washington DC, USA, late 19th or early 20th century. The fountain was designed by French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, who later created the Statue of Liberty. It was created for the 1876 Philadelphia Exposition, held to commemorate the centenary of the United States. After the exposition the fountain was purchased by the US Congress and was sited on the Mall in Washington DC. In 1927 it was moved to its present location, at the junction of Independence Avenue and First Street. Stereoscopic card. Detail.
