Collision of the 'Bywell Castle' with the 'Princess Alice', 1878 (1906). The paddle steamer 'Princess Alice' was rammed by the collier 'Bywell Castle' off Tripcock Point in the Thames Estuary on 3 September 1878. The 'Princess Alice' was split in two and sank in four minutes. Over 650 passengers lost their lives in the disaster. From Cassell's Illustrated History of England, Vol. VII.
