The Wayfarer's Dole, Hospital of St Cross, Winchester, Hampshire, early 20th century(?). Founded in the 12th century by Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester, the Hospital of St Cross is an almshouse which is the oldest charitable institution in Britain. The tradition of the Wayfarer's Dole, whereby travellers can obtain a small cup of ale and a piece of bread by asking at the Hospital's porter's lodge, was begun by a Cluniac monk and continues to the present day. From Winchester. [L Newman, The Square, London, ]
