The Privy Garden of Whitehall Palace, Westminster, 1741 (1911). The Privy Garden of the Palace of Whitehall, originally a pleasure garden used by the late Tudor and Stuart monarchs of England. It was created under Henry VIII, but lost its royal patronage after the palace was largely destroyed by fire in 1698. On the right is the banqueting hall designed by Inigo Jones. It was on this side of the building that the scaffold was erected upon which Charles I was executed in 1649. From London - North of the Thames, by Sir Walter Besant.
