There has been a royal castle on Castle Rock since the reign of David I in the 12th century, the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603. The Magne Camere or Great Hall of Edinburgh castle, constructed in 1434, where in 1437 James II of Scotland was proclaimed King, in 1633 Charles I held his coronation banquet and in 1648 Oliver Cromwell was entertained.
