'Budapest. - St Stephen's-statue', c1900. Stephen I, also known as King Saint (c. 975-1038) was the last Grand Prince of the Hungarians between 997 and c1001, and the first King of Hungary from c1001 until his death in 1038. A statue of Saint Stephen on horseback at Fishermen's Bastion. He became one of the most popular saints in Hungary, and the date of his canonisation is celebrated as a state holiday commemorating the foundation of the nation. [N. M. Bp, c1900]
