'Fortress of Yenikale Looking Towards the Sea of Azof', 1856. A depiction of the Fortress of Yenikale during the Crimean War (1853-1856). The fortress was originally built by the Ottomans in 1699?1706, on the Kertch peninsula. The name means New Fortress in Turkish. Yenikale was conquered by Russians in the 1770s and used as a military hospital until the building was completly abandoned in the 1880s. After William Simpson (1823-1899).
