'Attack on Porto Rico', 1797, (c1880). Located in the northeastern Caribbean, Puerto Rico formed a key part of the Spanish Empire during the early years of exploration, conquest and colonization in the New World. In 1702, the English assaulted the town of Arecibo on the North Coast with no success. In 1797, the French and Spanish declared war on the United Kingdom and the British attempted again to conquer the island, attacking San Juan with an invasion force of 7,000 troops and an armada consisting of 64 warships. From British Battles on Land and Sea, Vol. I, by James Grant. [Cassell Petter & Galpin, London, Paris & New York, c1880]
