'Mr. Lloyd George, Mr. Runciman, and Mr. Henderson at Park Hotel, Cardiff', 1915. On 15 July 1915 about 200,000 coalminers in south Wales went on strike. The strike was serious because the war effort depended on coal to fuel the navy and for the production of armaments. On behalf of the government Lloyd George imposed the terms of the Munitions of War Act on the coalfield.
