Humphry Davy, English chemist, (1833). Davy (1778-1829) discovered sodium and potassium, and the anaesthetic effects of laughing gas (nitrous oxide). In 1801 he was appointed lecturer at the Royal Institution. Davy became famous for his invention of the miners' safety-lamp. (Colorised black and white print).
