'Lewes Castle, in Sussex.', late 18th century. Lewes Castle in East Sussex was built in 1087 by William de Warenne, brother-in-law of William the Conqueror and 1st Earl of Surrey. A motte and bailey castle, the original wooden fortification was later replaced by one of stone. The motte was an artificial mound of chalk blocks. Published by Alexander Hogg.
