'At the Golden Gate', c1882, (c1902). After a painting in the Manchester Art Gallery. Victorian depiction of the biblical story of The Wise and Foolish Virgins. The Foolish Virgin wasted all the oil in her lamp and couldn't find her way in the dark, causing her to miss a magnificent wedding feast. She stands disconsolate at the gates. From The Nation's Pictures. A selection from the finest modern paintings in the public picture galleries of Great Britain, reproduced in colour. [Cassell and Company Ltd, London, c1902]
