'The Right Hon. John Poyntz Spencer, K.G.', 1879. John Poyntz Spencer, 5th Earl Spencer (1835-1910), Liberal politician, Lord President of the Council and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Also known as the Red Earl because of his distinctive red beard, Spencer was a close friend of British prime minister William Ewart Gladstone. From The Sporting Gazette and Agricultural Journal, 29th March 1879.
