'The Face in the Straw. - From Abbot's Anthologia, 1613', (1897). Father Henry Garnet's Straw - a bloodstained straw husk saved from the scene of his execution near St Paul's Cathedral in London in 1606, and said to bear Garnet's image. It became an object of curiosity but was later lost. Garnet (1555-1606) was an English Jesuit priest executed for his supposed complicity in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. From Old and New London, Volume I, by Walter Thornbury. [Cassell and Company, Limited, London, Paris & Melbourne, 1897]
