'Bethlehem Hospital', (c1878). View of the Bethlem Royal Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in London dating back to the 13th century. The building at St George's Fields in Lambeth, south London (seen here), was completed in 1815. New buildings, designed by Sydney Smirke, were added from the 1830s. The term 'bedlam' is derived from the hospital's prior nickname, (a corruption of Bethlehem). From Old and New London: A Narrative of Its History, Its People, And Its Places. The Southern Suburbs, Volume VI, by Edward Walford. [Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co., London, Paris & New York, c1878]
