'Tank Inquiry at Lincoln's Inn', c1919, (1945). British politician and statesman Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965) at an inquiry in London. Churchill had encouraged the development of the tank, which he believed would be useful in overcoming the problems of trench warfare during the First World War, and financed its creation with admiralty funds. Churchill was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, and again from 1951 to 1955. From "The Life and Times of Winston Churchill", by Malcolm Thomson. [Odhams Press Limited, London]
