'The Hand of Wren in the Fabric of Westminster Abbey', c1935. The facade of Westminster Abbey in London. In 1698 Christopher Wren was appointed Surveyor General & Sub Commissioner for Repairs to the Abbey. He installed leaded light windows and deep vaults. The two western towers, designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, were built between 1722 and 1745. In the foreground is the Westminster Scholars War Memorial, also known as the Crimea and Indian Mutiny Memorial, designed by George Gilbert Scott.
