Hampton Court, former royal palace in Richmond upon Thames, London, showing the south front of state apartments built for William and Mary, viewed from the Privy Garden. Sir Christopher Wren's addition was constructed on the site of part of the old Tudor palace after Henry VIII's state rooms and private apartments were demolished in the late 17th century.
