'Cardinal Wolsey Entering The Abbey of Leicester', 1530, (mid 19th century). Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (c1475-1530), was an English statesman and a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He was Henry VIII's most important government minister and the most powerful person in England, besides the King, for many years. Over time Wolsey became unpopular with the King and his court and eventually Wolsey was arrested near York in November 1530 and accused of treason. He died on 29th November of the same year at Leicester on his journey south to face trial. [John Tallis & Company, London & New York]
