'Throwing the Life-Line', 1890. Lifeboatmen in sou'westers carrying out a rescue in rough seas - the man in the centre preparing to throw the rope wears a belt of buoyancy aids. The Palling Volunteer Rescue Service, in the village of Sea Palling in North Norfolk, was established by private funds in 1840, with crews of volunteer local fishermen. The service was taken over by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in 1858.
