'Charles The First In The Guard Room', 1649, (mid 19th century). King Charles I is insulted by the soldiers of Oliver Cromwell, 27 January 1649. Charles (1600-1649) was monarch of the three kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 27 March 1625 until his execution on 30 January 1649. He was tried at Westminster Hall in London, and this scene shows him being mocked during his captivity. [John Tallis & Company, London & New York]
