A member of the Freikorps, a paramilitary organisation founded by German ex-soldiers after World War I, Schlageter (1894-1923) was regarded as a martyr by the Nazis. He was executed by the French after waging a campaign of sabotage during their occupation of the Ruhr in 1923. This rally was staged at the site of his execution on Golzheimer Heath. From Deutsche Gedenkhalle: Das Neue Deutschland compiled by General Von Eisenhart Rothe, 1939.
