The SS was established in 1925, originally as a bodyguard for Adolf Hitler, who was concerned about the power of the existing Nazi paramilitary organisation, the SA. It grew into one of the most powerful organisations in Nazi Germany From Deutsche Gedenkhalle: Das Neue Deutschland compiled by General Von Eisenhart Rothe, 1939.
