Looking towards the Dead Sea from the castle of Kerak, Jordan. Not to be confused with Krak des Chevaliers in Syria, the Crusader castle of Kerak was built in the 1140s by Pagan, butler of King Fulk of Jerusalem and Lord of Transjordan. It was besieged twice by Saladin, in 1183 and again after the Battle of Hattin (1187), falling to his armies in 1189.
