Harbour and castle, Kyrenia (Girne), North Cyprus. Originally a Roman fortress, Kyrenia Castle was enlarged by the Byzantines. The castle was captured by Richard I of England in 1191 when he defeated the last Byzantine governor of Cyprus, Isaac Comnenus and conquered the island. It was further enlarged by the Venetian rulers of Cyprus in the 16th century.
