A lap of honour for Trevithick's portable steam engine, London, 1808. In 1803 Cornish engineer Richard Trevithick designed the first self-propelled steam-powered vehicle, the 'London Steam Carriage', which he exhibited in London, driving it along the road from Holborn to Paddington and back. In 1808 he built a locomotive which he christened 'Catch me who can', charging a shilling admission to people to watch it run on a circular track in Bloomsbury (Trevithick's Steam Circus).
