Tinsley Viaduct under construction, Meadowhall, near Sheffield, South Yorkshire, 1967. The Tinsley Viaduct is one of the major structures on the M1. It forms a giant interchange with access to and exits from the M1 situated at each end. Originally designed on the back of a cigarette packet at a dinner dance, the viaduct cost £6 million to build and has a length of 1088 metres. It crosses the Sheffield canal and the Midland Mainline railway. In the photograph, one of the steel box sections can be seen being lifted into place.
