Aerial view of the city, Sagunto, Spain, 2007. Seen from the ruined hilltop citadel. Founded by the Celtic Iberians (Celtiberians) in the 5th century BC, Sagunto was an important and prosperous town by the 3rd century BC. An ally of Rome, it was besieged and captured by Hannibal in 219-218 BC, beginning the Second Punic War. From the 8th century until 1238 the town and citadel were in the hands of the Moors.
