Sortelha Fortress, Sortelha, Portugal, 2009. The main fortress of Sortelha still survives with its machicolations and embrasures that protected the castle entrance leading into the area where the keep is situated. The town is entirely surrounded by the wall, which has two gates flanked by towers. The historical village of Sortelha preserves its medieval features in the architecture of its rustic granite houses.
