Inspecting a telephone cable between Conduit and Maddox Streets, London, 20th century. The cables are fastened to the wires by rawhide suspenders, and the man is detaching the thick dark cable from the old wire and fastening it to the new wire, which also supports him. He sits in a 'bosun's chair', consisting of a board slung by a loop at either end, fastened to the wire.
