'Lombard Street, the Crookedest Street in the World, San Francisco, California', postcard, 1958. Vintage postcard view of Lombard Street showing the landscaping along the route and the houses that line the street. Lombard Street is famous for its switchback twists and turns which are necessary in order to enable vehicles to cope with the steepness of the slope which has a natural gradient of 27 degrees. The crooked section of the street, which is restricted to one-way traffic travelling downhill and has a speed limit of 5 mph, was laid out in 1923.
