Crown Prince Carl Gustaf and his grandfather, King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden, 1968. The son of of Prince Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten and Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Carl XVI Gustaf (1946-) became King of Sweden in 1973, succeeding his grandfather, who is seen here presenting him with a sabre as he is appointed an ensign in the military.
