St Anne's Church, Jerusalem, Israel. Situated in the Muslim quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, St Anne's Church is built on the site of a grotto that the Crusaders believed was the birthplace of Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary. It was built in 1138 by Arda, the widow of Baldwin I, King of Jerusalem. The church fell into ruin after Jerusalem was retaken by the Muslims, but was restored by the French after it was given to Napoleon III in 1856 by the Ottoman Turkish Sultan Abdulmecid I in gratitude for France's support in the Crimean War.
