American soldiers passing the statue of Hubert Lyautey, the French soldier who commanded his country's invasion and conquest of Morocco in 1896-1898. Casablanca fell to the Americans after they invaded Vichy French Morocco and Algeria as part of Operation Torch, beginning on 8 November 1942.
