Danilov Monastery, Moscow, Russia, before its closure, late 1920s. The Danilov Monastery was originally founded in the 13th century by Alexander Nevsky's son, Daniil. It was closed in 1929 by order of the Soviet authorities but since 1983 was the first monastery to be restored to the Moscow Patriarchy and now serves as the headquarters of the Russian Orthodox Church. Found in the collection of the Institute for the History of Material Culture, St Petersburg.
