Storming of the Swedish Nöteburg Fortress by Russian Troops, 11 October 1702 (1846). During the Great Northern War, a Russian army commanded by Peter the Great launched an amphibious assault on the Swedish-held Nöteburg Fortress on the shore of Lake Ladoga. The Swedish garrison of 250 soldiers held out for ten days before surrendering, killing 6000 Russians for the loss of 110 of their number. After the fort was captured, Peter renamed it the Schlisselburg (Key Fortress). Found in the collection of the State Hermitage, St Petersburg.
