'Darius the Great Opening the Tomb of Nitocris', 17th century. The third king of the Achaemenid dynasty, Darius I (550-486 BC) ruled the Persian Empire from 522 BC until his death. Nitocris was a queen of Babylon. According to Herodotus, Darius opened her tomb expecting to find treasure, but only discovered an inscription reproaching him for his greed. Found in the collection of the State Hermitage, St Petersburg.
