Statue of Martin Luther, Lutheran Cathedral, Helsinki, Finland, 2011. Luther (1483-1546) was a German priest and theologian who was a major inspiration behind the Protestant Reformation. He was excommunicated by Pope Leo IX in 1521 and declared an outlaw at the Diet of Worms. Under the protection of the Elector of Saxony, Luther produced a German translation of the Bible, and he went on to found the Lutheran Protestant Church. Helsinki's Lutheran Cathedral (Tuomiokirkko), also known as the Cathedral of St Nicholas, was designed by by Carl Engel and built between 1830 and 1852.
