The Rigi railway, Vitznau, Switzerland, 1895. The Rigi Railways are a system of toothed racks set between the tracks interlocking with cogwheels fitted under the locomotives. The Vitznau-Rigi Railway was the first mountain railway using rack and pinion technology, the gradient at some points being 1 in 4, (25%).
