'Death of Father Marquette', (1877). French Jesuit missionary Jacques Marquette (1637-1675), founded a European settlement in what is now Michigan, United States. In 1673 he and fellow explorer Louis Jolliet travelled down the Mississippi River and recorded the first accurate data on its course. Marquette died of dysentery aged 37.
