Scene from the First World War, 1914-1919: 'The landing-place chosen by the Australians was quickly transformed into a depot for all war stores and supplies of every kind. Roads and paths were cut on the steep hillsides to facilitate transport to the fighting line farther inland.' The Gallipoli peninsula in western Turkey saw heavy fighting, with many casualties on both sides. From "The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. IV, by W.
