'The Field-Marshal Thanking His Troops', (1919). Scene from the First World War, c1918: 'Sir Douglas Haig making a tour of the British line after a brilliantly successful operation in the great offensive. He is seen offering his personal thanks and congratulations to the officers and men of one of the Canadian battalions who had especially distinguished themselves.' Haig (1861-1928) served as Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) from December 1915 until the end of the war.
