'The German River of Fate', (1919). Scene from the First World War, 1914-1919: 'The German retreat to the Marne [River, northern France] in September 1915, when the German Army under Von Kluck was threatened, was as memorable as it was disastrous for them. The second retreat in July 1918 was no less disastrous. Their bridges were smashed to pieces by our [British] artillery, and their retreating troops were harassed and subjected to a terrific bombardment from our airmen above.' From "The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. VII, by W. Stanley Macbean Knight. [Caxton Pulishing Company, Limited, London, 1919]
